FOLK MUSIC IN LANCASTER BEST ENJOY'D WITH FINE ALE AND GOOD PUB GRUB..
LIVE FOLK MUSIC THIS MONTH AT THE ROBERT GILLOW IN LANCASTER.
THURS 2 SEPTEMBER - GREN BARTLEY AND TOM KITCHING
Tom Kitching & Gren Bartley are of the brightest young acts on the folk scene today. Playing music from a remarkably broad range of sources, their new album 'Boundary' crosses genres with a healthy disdain for arbitray pigeon-holing of styles and traditions. Some songs just need to be sung. "The instruments spark, with the combination of the bright fiddle and the acclaimed finger picking style of Bartley giving a lovely flow of tunes" Maverick Magazine. "Bartley proves to be an accomplished songwriter, with a restful voice that lulls it's way into the mind and heart." Allmusic.com.
THURS 9TH SEPTEMBER - GRAHAM ROBINSON
Oringinally from Jarrow on Tyne but now living in Colne, Lancashire, Grahams's playing reflects the styles of the early blues masters - particulary the east coast, syncopated styles of Blind Boy Fuller and Blind Blake. Other major influences include Rev. Gary Davis, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Big Bill Broonzy and Fred McDowell. A typical performance will include impassioned renditions of songs from the above artists played with energy and conviction on a very old Stella and National resonator guitars.
THURS 16TH SEPTEMBER - RIVER COUNTY INCIDENT
We present an evening of acoustic, rootsy, lo-fi Americana from this Preston-based duo. Dave Gardner plays guitar and sings and Matt Wells plays guitar, Dobro or Weissenborn lap steel guitar and banjo. Throw in a bit of harmonica, some Springsteen , a little Townes Van Zandt, Bob Dylan and Gram Parsons and mix with a heap of 'old-timey Appalachian murder ballad stuff' and you've got the idea.
THURS 23RD SEPTEMBER - PETE LASHLEY
Pete Lashley lives in south Cumbria and is a singer and guitarist who writes "Excellent songs" (Mark Sheldon, BBC6 Music) and according to Rod Clements of Lindisfarne, his "Confident vocals and guitar-picking go beyond just self-accompaniment. Pete deserves to be more widely heard on the acoustic/roots circuit." Agreed, he always presents a belting evening - so here he is once again.
THURS 30TH SEPTEMBER - THE DUO-FROM FOLK TO FLOYD
The Duo comprises Dave Emptage and Tony Cooke. "They combine folk and rock music skill, guitars and voices to play a range of acoustic music - a strange mix of songs from traditional folk, through some rock'n'roll to Pink Floyd..." To quote a local critic: "This is Lancaster's numero uno acoustic act. The perfect material is brought to life by their superb playing and vocal harmonies."
